Your gain structure is wrong
Gain structure is the foundation of every good mix. If the input gain (the sensitivity of each channel on the mixer) is set incorrectly too high or too low no amount of EQ or fader adjustment will fix the sound. Too high and you get distortion and feedback. Too low and the channel sounds weak and thin. Every channel should be gain-staged correctly before anything else is touched. This is the single most impactful change most churches can make immediately. Fix: During soundcheck, set each channel’s gain so the signal peaks comfortably in the green, never consistently hitting the red.
Nobody is equalising the room
Your speakers sound different in every room. The shape of the space, the ceiling height, the carpet, the number of people all of these affect how sound behaves. If your system has never been EQ’d for your specific room, you’re hearing the room’s problems amplified every Sunday. The monitors (what the musicians and worship leaders hear on stage) and the front-of-house mix (what the congregation hears) need to be managed separately. When stage volume is too loud either from monitor wedges or instrument amplifiers it bleeds into the room and makes the FOH mix impossible to control cleanly. Fix: Manage stage volume intentionally. Consider in-ear monitoring for your worship team to reduce stage bleed. And ensure your monitor engineer understands that a quieter stage almost always results in a better congregational mix.
